A group of individuals working to restore and repurpose the historic Scout House in downtown Athens are seeking the public’s help.
Friends of the Scout House are working with local author Jerry Barksdale to compile history on the Scout House, built about 1938, and Limestone County musicians who have made an impact in music. The group also is searching for historic photos of the Scout House, which was built to serve the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts. It later served as the Athens City Board of Education’s central office from 1965 to 2012.
The City of Athens has leased the Scout House to Athens Arts League and tasked the group with turning this unused historic structure into a musical venue that pays tribute to Limestone County's musical heritage, provides cultural and educational programs for the community, and offers students hands-on experience in an educational music lab.
Athens Arts League wants to empower youth by offering them the opportunity to learn about local music history, making music, and the music business. AAL also wants to enhance the community's art experience by providing a venue for house concerts, workshops, and other musical programs. Thirdly, AAL wants to preserve our county's musical heritage and history of the Scout House.
The committee is comprised of local citizens with backgrounds in music, fundraising, information technology, youth services and more.
Anyone who has history or historic photos of the Scout House or history on local musicians who have made an impact in the music industry can contact Barksdale by email at: email@example.com
